Uni strives for excellence in theatre and jazz

CQUniversity Australia is determined to build national centres of excellence in 2 niche areas of cultural endeavour - theatre and jazz/contemporary music.

The University has announced the first stage of the 'cultural shift' by designating Mackay as the new hub of music theatre, dance and drama and Rockhampton as a centre for jazz and contemporary music, consolidating and extending previous offerings.

The new Bachelor of Theatre and Bachelor of Music degrees will have specialisations reflecting these areas from 2009, with an extra 'technical production' specialisation (as part of the Bachelor of Theatre) available from 2010. Postgraduate offerings in jazz performance will become available in 2009. CQUniversity offers arts programs via the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

Professor and Director of Music & Performing Arts, Kevin Purcell said a vibrant cultural life was vital for the sustainability of regional Australia.

"And for our sustainability it was vital that we expand our footprint and become relevant to potential students from throughout Australia in areas where there are only a handful of other options for tertiary study," he said.

"There was no use in use reinventing the wheel in areas already serviced by other Conservatoriums."

Professor Purcell said the 'reinvigoration' process would include new postgraduate offerings in 'writing for the stage', to be delivered in intensive mode in Mackay and Melbourne. These offerings would be relevant for composers and lyricists.

The following year, 2010, the Conservatorium would introduce a unique creative industries program to be delivered from one of CQUniversity's international campuses.

A graduate program in radio music production was also on the horizon for delivery from Melbourne.

"In all cases we aim to be niche, specialised and high quality," Professor Purcell said.

He said the communities of Rockhampton and Mackay could look forward to an expanded program of concerts in 2009 and beyond, including national ensembles and international performers.
