Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

All Day Feast at CQU Rockhampton 

Nulloo Yumbah Cultural Day, a feast of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander food, dance and music is underway today, Friday 3 May, at Central Queensland University's Rockhampton Campus.

Nulloo Yumbah director William Oates invites the community to join the celebration with many activities, including an official welcome at 10am. Nulloo Yumbah is the University’s centre for Indigenous Learning and Research.

From 9.30am, learn the secrets of hot-coal cooking with an information session and demonstration of how to put down a “Kuppa Murri.” Visitors can taste the results of the in-ground cooking method with plates of the chicken, pork, beef and vegetables for lunch, from 12.30pm.

Dance and musical entertainment will include segments by Aboriginal dance troupe “Blackfella”, the Torres Strait Islander Saima Dancers, Woorabinda’s Wadja Wadja Dancers and Bernie Cristwood on didgeridoo.

One-hour workshops will start at 11am and 1pm on didgeridoo playing, story telling, face painting and palm weaving.

Arts and crafts displays and information stalls will be open throughout the day with tea, damper and bush brownies among the refreshments.

Oates encourages families to join the night program with a Family Disco and karaoke at Frenchville Sports Club from 7pm.
