Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Young musicians benefit from scholarships 

Young musicians from throughout Queensland will benefit from scholarships sponsored by CQUniversity, in conjunction with the recent (July 4-11) Sunwater and Stanwell Winter Music School.

The Music School was held in Rockhampton, presented by Southern Cross Soloists.

Sunshine Coast musician Andrew Wrangell has gained $2000 after being judged the "most outstanding musician at the conclusion of the week".

Mackay's Hannah Prouse has gained $500 for demonstrating a positive attitude and commitment and for making an exceptional contribution to the week's activities.

Michael Vlasic, from Mt Julian via Proserpine, has gained $500 to assist with his transport costs from a rural area.

Scholarships valued at $500 have also gone to Bundaberg's Amy Clements (Oboe), Brisbane's James Grafton (Bassoon), Brisbane's Mitchell McLeod (French Horn), Brisbane's Anton Kalish-Smith (Tuba), the Sunshine Coast's Natalie Kitney (Viola) and the Sunshine Coast's Kinga Janiszewski (Double Bass).

Participating students were supported by an instrumental and vocal faculty that featured some of the finest musicians and teachers in Australia.

During the school, students had the opportunity to be involved in a full symphony orchestra, symphonic band, massed choir, stage band, chamber music groups, and brass, string and percussion ensembles.

They also participated in workshops for all instruments, voice, keyboard and guitar.

"Our University is proud to be a community partner, enhancing music education and providing opportunities like this for students from across Queensland to learn, grow and be inspired," Vice-Chancellor Professor John Rickard said.
