Female science students discover CQU
Published on 05 May, 2005
Around 60 budding female science and technology students will converge at Central Queensland University Mackay Campus on May 13-14.
Girls In For Technology and Science (GIFTS) is an interactive hands-on conference that enables female students to pursue their interests in science, engineering and technology.
CQU Mackay will run sessions on biology, environmental science, multimedia and engineering.
“As part of the program, students will participate in water quality testing, and identifying fresh water organisms. This introduces students to some aspects of environmental science”, Dr Judith Wake, Environmental Science Lecturer said.
“It is a great opportunity to gain knowledge in some of the non-traditional areas of science, engineering and technology.”.
“The conference enables students to make informed decisions regarding their future science, engineering and technology direction, including career options and study alternatives”, GIFTS University Coordinator Vivien Clift said.
Year 11 students will travel from Bowen, Collinsville, Calen, Moranbah and Sarina to join local Mackay students for the two-day conference.
The Centre for Excellence in Science, Maths and Technology at Pioneer State High School is facilitating the event in conjunction with CQU Mackay.
