CQUniversity Bachelor of Medical Science student Kelsie West has been awarded The Keith Harrower Memorial Book Prize for 2010.
Kelsie was presented with her book prize by academic prize donor Lynette Harrower and CQUniversity's donor scholarship and prize coordinator Tamsen Clifford-Banks.
Kelsie West was presented with The Keith Harrower Memorial Book Prize. The Keith Harrower Memorial Book prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest aggregate grade in the course " Microbiology" from the School of Medical and Applied Sciences.
The prize was established last year by wife of the late Associate Professor Keith Harrower, who lectured at CQUniversity in Microbiology and Mycology in Rockhampton for over 30 years.
Keith arrived from the Australian National University in 1979 when CQUniversity was known as the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education.
He had an excellent background in mycology having studied under the internationally renowned expert Professor John Webster and became an expert in fungal identification.
Keith passed away in March 2010 after a short illness.
His wife Lyn recalled Keith as always being available to assist his students, particularly those who showed interest and tried hard but not always achieved the highest marks.
He would give a text book of their choice (to be used in their next course) to any student who achieved a high standard in the subject 'Introductory Microbiology' - Mrs Harrower now continues this practice in Keith's memory.
"Even before the age of emails, Keith was always available to his external students by phone at any time of the day or night or at weekends. Keith valued education and took great pride in the academic achievements of all of his students," explained Mrs Harrower.
The prize is a fitting way to honour a great long serving member of CQUniversity's staff who was passionate about education and about his students.
The cost of tuition and study materials can be high, and the assistance in the form of a text book was greatly appreciated by Kelsie West, who expressed her appreciation to Mrs Harrower for the generous prize.
