Bundy nursing students learn from local ambos

There was action away from the station for two Bundaberg ambos recently.

CQU Bundaberg School of Nursing & Health Studies lecturers and members of the Queensland Ambulance Service combined to teach second year undergraduate nurses the principles of in-hospital advanced life support/resuscitation.

PhotoID:253 Lecturer Sonja Cleary said two role plays were performed to demonstrate the impact good teamwork and poor teamwork in a resuscitation procedure.

“The role plays were designed to ensure the undergraduate nurses understood the principle roles nurses undertake during in-hospital resuscitation and the benefits of knowing your equipment and communicating with team member,” Ms Cleary said.

The Queesland Ambulance service members provided some of the equipment not available on-campus such as the cardiac defibrillator and a mannequin.

“The experienced officers were also able to recount their prior experiences related to resuscitation and teamwork. All their insights were highly valued by all the students who attended and it was very successful.” The session was video conferenced to the other CQU Rockhampton and Mackay where the Bachelor of Health – Nursing is offered.

At the end of the role play students had the opportunity of asking questions about the roles that the Queensland Ambulance Service members play in out-of-hospital resuscitation. This session gave the students and invaluable insight into the occupation of an intensive care paramedic.
