Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Guest Speaker - The Honourable Stan Jones AO 

The Honourable Stan Jones AO, QC, LLB Qld has recently retired from the position of Far Northern Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland, based in Cairns.  His Honour was born in Gladstone and educated at the Gladstone State High School and Nudgee College, Brisbane.  He joined the Supreme Court in 1997, following a distinguished 33 year career in the practising profession, mostly as Counsel, and for the last 8 years as Queen's Counsel.

He was the Foundation Chairman of the Rockhampton Aboriginal Legal Service and held the position of Commissioner of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission for five years. He was also a Trustee of the Rockhampton Art Gallery for nine years and President of the Rockhampton Club.

In 1975 he was appointed a member of the Council of the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education, and resigned from the Council of Central Queensland University in 2004, after 20 years service, 14 of them as Chair of the Council and University Chancellor. In this role, he worked tirelessly for the advancement of this institution, establishing and chairing the CQU Foundation, and in discussions with State and Commonwealth Ministers and senior public servants, Central Queensland Members of the House of Representatives and the Queensland Legislative Assembly on such matters as funding, legislation and audit.

He chaired the Editorial Board of the CQU Press, the University's publishing arm which specialised in outback books, regional history and heritage.  His commitment to ensuring the institution was suitably placed to enable it to provide excellent educational opportunities within a regional area that had previously limited options, has been fundamental to the University's success.

In recognition of his contributions to education and legal and judicial services in Central Queensland, he was recognised by the nation in 2005 with his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia.  He has also been awarded two honorary doctorates.
