Study and career options available at new Discover CQU centre

Discover CQU, a pilot project involving collaboration across the University, officially opened for business this week on East Street (Rockhampton) next to the Commonwealth Bank.

About 50 University staff, CQU Foundation members and business people attended the launch.

In a symbolic gesture, Vice-Chancellor & President Professor Glenice Hancock split a ribbon and opened the doors to the shop front.

PhotoID:1161 “We want anyone thinking about attending CQU to be able to walk in and get useful information in a positive, supportive environment,” said Ricki Jeffery, CQU’s Director of University Relations.

“That means high school students, people looking to start or change career, parents, teachers... It’s an easy-to-find off-campus location near a lot of shops close to where a lot of people work,” she added.

CQU will respond to the needs of prospective students by providing information on preparatory, undergraduate and postgraduate studies, program availability, applications and more. Discover CQU will also offer on-site career planning services and provide information on CQU research activities and opportunities.

“A strong physical presence in the CBD like this further demonstrates our reach into the community beyond the campus,” explained Ms Jeffery.

CQU has six locations in the Rockhampton CBD. Staff and students from CQU’s Faculty of Education and Creative Arts operate out of the Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street and staff involved in Business & Law programs work from the Old Supreme Court. Journalism courses are delivered in the Old Magistrates Court, while the Old District Court houses the University’s council room and is used for meetings. A variety of staff, student and community link activities operate out of the Commonwealth Building, on the corner of Fitzroy and East Streets. Discover CQU is now open in the former Telstra shop front, next to the Commonwealth Bank.

“We’ll listen and provide a service in consultation with customers and hopefully offer some options for them to consider,” Ms Jeffery said.

PhotoID:1162 Discover CQU provides ready access to information, including brochures, prospectuses and online services.

A career planning and assessment service will also be available to help people make informed decisions about study and career options.

“Career planning is not only something that will direct you to the degree that is right for you, but will also assist you in understanding what you are capable of doing once you finish,” CQU Manager of Student Services, Mary McKavanagh said.

Career planning sessions will be offered at Discover CQU by appointment.
