A former Central Queensland University business student is now the head of commercial banking at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) Fiji.

Haroon Ali began working for the bank 27 years ago and recently was promoted from branch manager to senior executive.

Helping businesses grow in a depressed economy is one of his challenges.

"One of the challenges is that customers are taking a wait-and-see approach to new investments," Mr Ali told the Fiji Times this week.

"With a downward trend in lending rates, we hope to see a lift in new investments."

Mr Ali described his work with the bank as enjoyable.

"I like meeting people and this job allows me to interact with my staff and many customers," he said.

"I really enjoy dealing with my business customers.

"One of the most exciting things to date has been the opportunity to work with the bank's corporate banking division in Melbourne."

Mr Ali, who is originally from Vunimoli Village in Labasa, joined the bank straight from school.
