Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Dynamic achievers recognised in Melbourne 

The latest recipients of the State Director Victoria awards are all dynamic achievers who have been a credit to CQU Melbourne International Campus.

One of the awardees, 'Ivy' Chung Wei Hoon, was also selected to deliver a vote of thanks on behalf of graduates at the Melbourne graduation recently.

The Bachelor of Business graduate comes from Malaysia and developed a high profile among staff and students due to her active participation and frequent volunteer contribution to a wide range of campus activities, including TECC (Training, Employment and Career Coaching), Orientation and cultural events.

Her engaging personality and dedicated attitude to her studies impressed everyone who interacted with her. In future, Ivy's aim is to continue learning, building on her Australian work experience and developing her networks to pursue a career as a professional marketer in Melbourne or Sydney.

Meanwhile, Bachelor of Accounting graduate Galmangoda Guruge Asela Nuwan Richard de Silva, from Colombo in Sri Lanka, consistently obtained excellent academic results.

His achievements include gaining a perfect score for one course as well as the top grade for the Melbourne campus in another 2 courses.  Noted for his modesty, 'Richard' readily acknowledges the support and motivation he gained from his lecturers and tutors throughout his program.  His respectful manner and positive attitude inspired many fellow students whom he willingly supported in class and actively encouraged with job seeking.

With Australian work experience in an accounts-related role, Richard's aim now is to complete his CPA qualifications, then secure a corporate accounting role with one of Australia's top 10 companies.

Master of Information Technology graduate Kanjalweet Singh, or 'Raj' as he prefers to be called, originates from Imphal in the north-east of India.

He has not only impressed staff and fellow students with his academic achievements but also the initiative he has shown establishing the foundations for his own local IT recruitment business in less than 2 years, as well as an e-commerce real estate project.

Described as consistently helpful to fellow students and a natural leader, he was among the top students in all courses, including gaining the highest Melbourne campus grade for one course.

With experience as a sales executive also, his future goal is to create a highly successful enterprise so that he is in a position to offer employment to others (particularly CQU graduates).  Those who have worked and studied with him have no doubt he will succeed.

Master of Accounting graduate Pratima Darak's impressive academic record demonstrates she is one of the finest Melbourne achievers, as she was continually among the most talented in all her programs.

She particularly inspired students from her homeland India and her special achievements include obtaining the University's highest grade for 3 courses and the top grade for Melbourne campus twice.

Described as a model student and widely recommended by staff for this award, Pratima's assistance and advice was also valued by fellow students.  Her goal now is to complete CPA qualifications and establish her career as a successful accountant.
