Children to enjoy hands-on science at Open Day

Children can make practical jokes, construct rockets and make a pizza oven, all in the name of science at this year’s CQU Rockhampton Open Day on Sunday August 14.

Bachelor of Learning Management second-year students will be promoting CQU’s BLM degree through visual displays and interactive science and technology activities for children from 10am until 4pm on the Rockhampton Campus.

PhotoID:2361 The program of children’s activities is based on authentic science and technology learning experiences, and will take place on the grassed area adjacent to Building 33.

Parents are encouraged to stay and enjoy the activities, which are designed to cater to different age groups.

Activities will commence at 10am with 'Make Your Own Magic Tricks' for children aged from preschool/prep to year three, followed by activities for a range of age groups including making a "Pizza Box Oven" at noon.

The BLM degree has been described as the most innovative new teaching degree in Australia, and has attracted students from all walks of life ranging from school leavers to mature age adults.

The University is offering – for the first time – more than 30 information and career seminars at the CQU Rockhampton Open Day which coincides with the Central Queensland Multicultural Fair.

The CQU Rockhampton Open Day also features scores of prizes, activities and competitions, including $4000 in prizes up for grabs at the Faculty of Informatics and Communication displays. Here you can play a game, fly a plane or surf the net to go into the draw.

“CQU offers about 100 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. School leavers and adult learners will have a chance on Sunday to visit faculty displays, take campus tours and meet with lecturers, students and alumni. There’s nothing like visiting CQU to get a feel for the University and our services and programs,” explained Mike Donahue, an Open Day coordinator.

PhotoID:2362 All prospective students are strongly urged to attend an 'Enrolling at CQU' seminar, which gives prospective students (of any age) and their families information on CQU application procedures, fees and academic standards.

A full program of events will be available in the CQ Multicultural Fair and CQU Rockhampton Open Day lift-out in 'The Morning Bulletin' on Thursday, August 11.
