Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Participants work together in teams of four to seven members to present their best & most creative solution to an intellectually stimulating, open ended 'Creative Sustainability' Challenge. Each year there are 3 new & exciting Challenges to choose from in the categories of: Language Literature; Science Engineering; and the Social Sciences.

Who can be involved?...

Anyone interested in creativity, collaboration, innovation & FUN!

There are four divisions in the Opti-MINDS Challenge. The educational level/age of the oldest team member determines the division the team enters:

Div 1   - Open to all students in years P -7

Div 2   - Open to all students from years P - 10

Div 3   - Open to all students from years P - Tertiary

OPEN - Membership of any age, from anywhere without restriction.

All teams must have 4 - 7 members at Nomination.

Thousands of people flock annually to participate in, to watch & enjoy the exhilarating spectacle of presentations & the ingenious solutions created by motivated particpants who have taken up the Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge.

The Challenge Process...

The Challenge process provides the stimulus for our UNASHAMEDLY EXCELLENT! (c) participants to unleash their creative problem solving skills & is comprised of two intriguing elements: The Long Term Challenge & The Spontaneous Challenge.

Long Term Challenge: The teams of 4 -7 together on their selected Challenge over a period of up to 6 weeks, are encouraged to explore the possibilities & experiment with ideas to produce their best & most creative solutions. They develop exciting & original ways to communicate their solution to others, working within predefined parameters such as limited materials & complex criteria.

The Spontaneous Challenge: Teams must also particpate in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge given on the Opti-MINDS Day. This Challenge requires rapid interchange of ideas; the ability to think effectively & creatively; combined with well developed group cooperation skills.
