Hervey Bay's Tim Wickham bought his first computer when he was just 10-years-old and, apart from a stint in the army, has rarely spent a day away from a computer screen since.

He now runs his own multimedia business - New Perception Technologies - creating state-of-the-art integrated multimedia systems for business and residential purposes.

So why is he travelling to Gladstone to attend CQUniversity's Bachelor of Digital Innovation workshop next week?

Tim believes a digital innovation degree could give him the edge he needs in the IT market.

"To be relevant in today's world, not only do you need the practical experience, you also need the background knowledge," Tim said.

"I can do anything with hardware and proprietary software, but people want and need customised solutions today and that requires a higher level of programming knowledge.

"The Bachelor of Digital Innovation at CQUniversity meets all my needs as a business owner allowing me to complete the program in my own time through flexible study and it has the industry relevance and practical application that I need.

"I am really excited about the possibilities the CQUniversity degree offers and their reputation as a proactive, innovative university has also helped my decision to further my qualifications there."

The digital technology workshop and information evening will be staged at CQUniversity Gladstone on Tuesday September 23 in the Martin Hanson Building from 6pm to 8pm and in Rockhampton on Thursday September 25 in Building 28/room 1.12.

The sessions will enable students and their parents to gain a better understanding of digital industries. It will also enable them to explore the tools used to create content for movies, games and the web.

CQUniversity lecturer in Digital Innovation Brendan Murphy will demonstrate the new game Spore and discuss how many different digital industries have played a part in its creation.

He will also give an overview of the Bachelor of Digital Innovation program and explain how the different skills covered throughout the degree relate to the kinds of jobs entailed in the creation of Spore.

Participants will also have the opportunity to use industry-standard software to experience the behind the scenes workings of a 3D animation. Students will get to use software like Autodesk Maya and Adobe Photoshop.

Complimentary pizza and refreshments will be serviced after the sessions.
