Students look to building a career

Central Queesland University and the Stanwell Corporation have joined forces to show high school students the world of engineering at a three-day camp this week.
More than 50 Year 11 students who are considering engineering as a career, or who are undecided about their futures, are participating in The Engineering Link Group Project from Tuesday to Thursday.
Project coordinator Paul Richards said students briefly hear engineers speak about themselves and their disciplines, why they chose engineering as a career and what was involved in their course of study. Students then get hands-on experience in civil, electrical, mechanical, structural and environmental engineering.
An engineer from the 3rd Combat Engineering Regiment will work with the students on their project which will involve bridge building under time and material constraints.
“The major goal of the project is that the students be engineers, not just watch engineers,” Mr Richards said.
The students will prepare working drawings, construction instructions, cost analyses, environmental impact statements and workplace safety reports. These are presented to an engineer, as their client, for their consideration. After approval the students will commence construction, and later the projects will be tested.
Students from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gladstone, Tannum Sands, Boyne Island, Mackay and Proserpine are taking part in the camp.
