Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Emerald STEPS graduates now longer green 

A happy group of STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Skills) students celebrated the completion of their course for 2007 on Friday, October 12 at CQU Emerald.

More than 60 guests attended the event.

After the formalities, everyone joined for a sumptuous barbecue dinner prepared by the Australian Agricultural College.

During the evening, students were presented with their Completion Certificates by Karen Seary, the Head of Academic Learning Support for the Division of Teaching and Learning Services.

Another distinguished guest and keynote speaker for the evening was CQU's Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Angela Delves.

Geraldine Coughlan spoke on behalf of the 2007 students, discussing her STEPS journey and what the course had meant to her and the rest of the students.

Entertainment for the evening was presented by Maria Parlato and Mary Pearce who performed Hallelujah, accompanied by Br. Bernard Yamaguchi.  Also providing entertainment was James Raschle, newly appointed music teacher at Marist College, who performed Accentuate the Positives on the trombone.

STEPS Coordinator for the Emerald Campus, Jo Rosenblatt, said she was very pleased with the evening and that a good time had been had by all. 

The celebration concluded with the cutting of the cake by Eva Dodds and Joel Coates. 

Campus Coordinator, Gai Sypher said, "The STEPS course is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in preparing for further University studies or in upgrading their Computing, Mathematics and Language skills."  STEPS is completely free to anyone over 18 years of age.  For more information contact the Emerald Campus of CQU on 4982 8888.
