Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Graduations recognise pioneer and broadcaster 

Pioneering staff member Kevin Fagg will become an Emeritus Professor and broadcaster Ross Quinn will receive an Honorary Master of Communication degree during CQU graduations in Rockhampton on Saturday (October 2).

Kevin Fagg retired this year from the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Resources) after continuous service to CQU since he started as an assistant lecturer in 1967.

Ross Quinn has worked as a reporter, announcer and station manager with ABC Radio since 1970 and has worked alongside CQU on projects including the CQ Multicultural Fair and major jazz tours.

A total of 220 graduates are expected to attend the morning and afternoon ceremonies on Saturday.

They will hear guest speeches from Ross Quinn (morning) and distinguished American academic Professor Moya Andrews (afternoon).

PhD recipients and thesis titles include: Kathleen Baker (Compensating for Cognitive Deficits in Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder); Peter Thomas (Evolutionary Learning of Control and Strategies in Robot Soccer); David Grasby (The adoption and diffusion of environmental innovations in the Australian sugar industry: a sociological analysis); Ayesha Hall (Changing perspectives: Formulations of identity in contemporary Australian literature). Meanwhile, Colin 'John' Millar's Professional Doctorate topic was an evaluation of change in facility management in a non-profit organisation.

The graduations will be held at the Rockhampton Baptist Tabernacle in Norman Road.

Music for the ceremonies will feature Rockhampton-born professional tenor Christopher Saunders (accompanied by pianist Mary Steer) and Capricornia Silver Band.
