Employees nibble away at effects of cancer

Years of snacking, morning teas and barbecues at CQUniversity and QR National are paying off for the Rockhampton-based Childhood Cancer Support Inc, thanks to a husband and wife team.

Gary and Karen Reynolds have convinced their workmates to donate to this worthwhile charity by staging a range of food-related activities.

A total of $15,600 has been raised over the past seven years, including $4000 in the past 12 months alone.

Accepting the funding each year has been Jenny Hilcher who not only lost a child to cancer but who is herself a cancer survivor.

Jenny says funds raised for Childhood Cancer Support directly assist Central Queensland families faced with extra costs when a child is diagnosed with cancer.

For example, the organisation provides accomodation units in Brisbane so family members can travel with children requiring treatment in capital city hospitals.

Jenny works alongside Cancer Council Queensland and gets referrals from that organisation but her efforts are aimed specifically at family support.
