Community program participants tour Rocky campus

A small group of CQU Community Program participants learnt about CQU’s aquatic research and work with water conservation during a tour of the Rockhampton campus last Tuesday, April 18.
CQU’s Paul Graham treated the group to information about the aquatic research being done in animal sciences, while Professor David Midmore along with PhD students Lance Pendergast and Phul Subedi at Plant Sciences, provided some interesting information about the work being done to benefit Central Queensland and beyond through water conservation and re-use, plant management and non-invasive fruit sweetness assessment.
Participants joined in a Bachelor of Performing Arts second-year voice class and then watched a third-year dance and movement class before heading to the dining room at Capricornia College for a ‘student’ lunch and a tour of the residential facilities.
Information about the facilities at the gymnasium and a trial run on some equipment completed the day.
Community Program coordinator Glenys Kirkwood said each member of the public was impressed with the facilities on offer for CQU students and were extremely appreciative of the time given to them by CQU personnel.
“Exercises such as this one are invaluable in allowing people, who would never normally have contact with CQU, the ability to see inside some of the additional work being done there which benefit our local region,” Mrs Kirkwood explained.
“Everyone understands the teaching done at CQU, but few appreciate the added value CQU contributes to our community. Tours such as this allow that to happen,” she said.
