Bundaberg music and film enthusiasts will be treated to a free performance by international musical explorer Mike Cooper next month.

Central Queensland University, in conjunction with the Bundaberg Media Research Group and the Bundaberg Arts Centre, will host Mike Cooper's live soundtrack to the Japanese 1964 cult classic Onibaba by Director Kaneto Shindo on Wednesday, April 23 from 8pm at CQU Bundaberg (building 5 G.22).

Cooper will perform an electro-acoustic accompaniment to the dark, cautionary fable of 2 women in feudal Japan who eke out a meagre existence by murdering passing soldiers and selling their clothes and armour. The central theme of the film is the darkness of the human soul.

For the past 40 years, Cooper has been performing and recording solo and in a number of inspired groupings across a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter, his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art and sound installations.

He is also a music journalist, visual artist, film and video maker ... and a collector of Hawaiian shirts.

Enthusiasts are also encouraged to be involved in a live experimental audio workshop with Cooper at the Bundaberg Arts Centre's Access Studio on Thursday April 24 at 2pm and a live-mixed audio-visual performed by Cooper and CQU's Grayson Cooke on Thursday April 24 at the Bundaberg Arts Centre, 4th Dimension Space at 8pm. Both events are free.

For more information regarding any of these events, contact Grayson Cooke on 4150 7136 or g.cooke@cqu.edu.au .
