CQU has first degree leading to procurement award

CQU will be the first tertiary institution whose degree-level procurement qualification has been accredited as leading to the award of MCIPS (Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply).

According to a release from CIPS Australia, the MCIPS is the only internationally recognised standard for procurement professionals.

In the UK, CIPS is the awarding body. The MCIPS award has a high recognition factor with employers, not only in the UK but elsewhere in the world.

The recently-formed CIPS Australia has been set up with a similar aim to raise procurement education standards and educate business on the importance of employing MCIPS qualified managers.

"The purchasing profession in Australia still suffers a lack of credibility with senior management, and partly this is due to the fact that there is no universally recognised educational standard," said Jonathon Dutton, CEO, CIPS Australia.

"CQU has taken the first step to ensuring that its graduating students will be recognised by potential employers as truly qualified to enter the profession.".

Students completing their Bachelor of Business (Procurement and Supply or Operations Management) who are members of CIPS Australia and can demonstrate three years' practical work experience will be eligible for the award of MCIPS.

CQU currently has more than 150 students enrolled in procurement courses, most of whom undertake their degree via distance learning.

CQU Dean of Business & Law Professor Catherine Smith said the University was delighted to become accedited to the CIPS international standard in this vital new business subject area.

"External resource management is key to business success in the modern business world. CQU aims to be ahead of key busines needs in the curriculum it offers," Professor Smith said.

Mr Dutton said CQU would effectively provide successful students with two major qualifications - their degree in procurement and a globally recognised standard enabling them to transport their skills anywhere in the world.

CIPS Australia is wholly-owned by the UK-based Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, which is an international not-for-profit organisation.
