Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Unisong conductor shortlisted for national recognition 

Rockhampton music teacher and CQUniversity graduate Janet Stevenson has been named as a final-19 shortlisted finalist in a national award scheme recognising inspiring leadership.

The third annual Music in Communities Awards, run by the Music Council of Australia, offer a prize pool of $20,000 and are themed each year to focus on an important aspect of community music making.

Janet is one of a hundred nominations received from bands, choirs, orchestras and other community music organisations from around Australia.

As well as being musical director and conductor for the Unisong Community Choir based at Rockhampton Campus, Janet has had leadership roles with Rockhampton Youth Orchestra and the Rockhampton Chamber Music Society.

She has undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Education from CQUniversity.

According to Awards convenor, Tina Broad of the Music Council of Australia, Janet has provided mentoring, support and development of community musicians within the region.

"She has provided a network of community outreach to a broad cross-section of instrumentalists, choral members and ensemble performers.  Through her work, Janet has sought to encourage collaboration between these groups and with other community music organisations to create higher level performance opportunities for members of the Rockhampton regional community," Ms Broad said.

Winners are scheduled to be announced in late February.
