Kate sees clear career path, thanks to starry skies

Growing up in Alton Downs away from the city light haze, Kate Henkel was able to marvel at clear, star-filled skies. Then followed her first telescope and the idea to study physics as a springboard into a career in astronomy.

Meantime, Kate has also been developing her talents on the cello, including performing in a range of pit orchestras for shows including Jesus Christ Superstar, Seussical and Miss Saigon.

She's recently joined CQ Strings and will perform in support of The Camerata of St Johns ensemble during a Snapshots concert at Rockhampton Pilbeam Theatre, on the evening of Tuesday, July 26.

This has already been a busy year, as Kate has just completed her first work placement with Ergon Energy, as part of her Bachelor of Applied Physics (Co-op) program.

Longer-term, she's looking forward to more specific studies and research in astronomy, as there'll likely be jobs coming on line as Western Australia progresses its proposed Square Kilometre Array (SKA) of radio telescopes throughout the next decade.
