Scientists invited to attend Parliamentary event

Some of the "greats" of Queensland science have accepted an invitation to communicate their ideas directly to Members of Parliament during Science in Parliament next month.

Premier Peter Beattie said Queensland's second Science in Parliament would include some of the most brilliant minds working in, or originating from, Queensland.

"The collective IQ at Parliament House will be off the richter scale on August 20," Mr Beattie said.

"Nobel Laureate Professor Peter Doherty (a 2003 Queensland Great), 2002 Queensland Great Professor Lawrie Powell, 2001 Queensland Great Dr Joe Baker, and 2003 Queenslander of the Year Professor Alan Mackay-Sim will be among the stellar scientists at Parliament House.

"Other scientists are invited to attend the event, which gives them an opportunity to discuss the future of science in the Smart State with Members of Parliament.

"Science in Parliament will include discussions on topical issues such as biodiscovery, commercialisation and research and development priorities," Mr Beattie said.

Mr Beattie said Queensland is the only State Parliament to hold such an event.

"But others are taking note," he said.

"Victoria and New South Wales have sought our advice on holding their own events. "I encourage scientists across Queensland to be part of this important event and register by July 14," Mr Beattie said.

Scientists interested in attending Science in Parliament can register online at www.iie.qld.gov.au/innovation/science.asp Morning and afternoon tea and lunch are provided but scientists are responsible for their own travel and accommodation.

A complete program for the day will be forwarded to all successful nominees by August 1, 2003.
