Vomit on the Dance Floor: The 'Choices' are yours.

Twelve students from the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) will be performing excerpts from their production ‘Choices’ at the 7th Australian Injury Prevention Conference/2nd Pacific Rim Safe Communities Conference in Mackay today, September 16, 2004.

‘Choices’ is a collaborative project between Queensland Health, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service and the CQCM.

PhotoID:1467 Each year ‘Choices’ is presented to Year 12 students in all high schools in Mackay and District, including Moranbah, Clermont, Proserpine and Sarina.

‘Choices’ is a 45-minute presentation that incorporates drama, music and dance. The aim of the show is to bring messages about safe partying during ‘Schoolies Week’ to all Year 12’s before they head off to various resorts along the coast to ‘let off steam’ at the end of their secondary school years.

‘Choices’ has been recognised by Queensland Police Service and Queensland Health as being an effective way to convey messages about drug and alcohol use to young people as well as making them aware of their legal obligations and the consequences of their actions.

Students from CQCM prepare the show in collaboration with the various agencies to ensure all key messages are included, however it is all done in a fun and entertaining way.

‘Choices’ has been presented in Mackay and district for over 5 years now and according to CQCM sub-dean Judith Brown, “the presentation has grown in popularity with all stakeholders, particularly the schools.".

PhotoID:1468 “At the end of the 2003 season, schools immediately booked for the 2004 season as they recognised its value in helping to prepare students for their ‘Schoolies’ experience”, said Ms Brown.

Students of Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music will present short excerpts from the 2004 Choices program during the course of the symposium session.

“As this is an international conference we have a unique opportunity to present the ideas behind ‘Choices’ to delegates from around the world,” said Ms Brown.
