CQU team funded for Shoalwater Bay research

CQU's Dr Errol Vieth and Kate Ames, from Informatics and Communication, have gained Army History Research Grants Scheme funding to examine the growth of the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area.

They will do so through the eyes of its first commander, Maj. J. H. Crigan, from his appointment in August 1966 until his retirement in May 1974.

Dr Vieth said many aspects of the development of the facility will be documented ... "the overall (and changing) plan for the facility, the strategies that were implemented to develop the area, the links between the town and the military, the impact of the Vietnam war on the activities of the training area, to name a few".

Dr Vieth said the project had a significant community focus. He said outcomes will include articles in Australian history journals.
