In a moving ceremony attended by his wife Norma, daughters Jill and Samantha, and close friends, the Citation stated Dr Gold's exceptional service to Central Queensland following his distinguished service in the Second World War.

His strong connection with the Central Queensland community began with oversight of the Rockhampton and Yeppoon hospitals and the Westwood Tuberculosis Sanatorium.  This led to private practice and then at age 50, with the support of his first wife Lesley and 2 daughters, going back to postgraduate study in Sydney for qualification as a specialist dermatologist.

For over 30 years, Dr Gold provided this vitally important service to a catchment population of around 600,000 until he reluctantly retired at the age of 86.

As a consistent supporter and advocate for CQUniversity since its inception, he, along with his wife Norma and second wife Moya, has been a generous benefactor to the University in a number of ways.

Dr Gold's response was heartfelt. The 92-year-old spoke of his connection to his Alma Mater - Adelaide University, his work with universities in Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane and, then, his great desire to be a real part of the University he felt closest to, CQUniversity Australia.

"Its connection to its community is unique," he said, "and sets it apart as ‘best practice' from any other I have had contact with throughout my diverse career.

"Today has fulfilled a dream for me.  It's cemented my right to wear the CQUniversity Australia robes and allowed me to finally feel like a ‘real' Doctor at last."
