About 15,000 people died in the horrific events that unfolded in Japan, while there are still around 15,000 people missing. There was dreadful damage to homes, industry and infrastructure.

CQUniversity was hosting a number of exchange students from Japan at the time of the event, as well as a number of Study Tours at the English Language Centre.

At last week's event, Suika Ito, who comes from Miyagi University of Education in Sendai, spoke of the comfort and strength that the Japanese people have found from gestures like the fundraising barbecue held at the University.
