Scholarship winner recommends bridging programs

Rockhampton-based mum of four kids Julie Hawke recommends that people consider bridging programs like STEPS (skills for tertiary education preparatory studies) and WIST (women into science and technology).

PhotoID:1376 Mrs Hawke was recently presented with a WIST scholarship and aims to continue studying towards a science degree.

"If you don't learn anything else with STEPS, you will lear so much about yourself ... I would also recommend WIST as people do not realise how interesting science and maths really is until they take a closer look," she said.

Mrs Hawke said she had not yet made her career choices, preferring to concentrate first on "doing well at uni".

The WIST program provides the prerequisites for study in science at CQU and has catered for more than 3000 students since starting 15 years ago. Between 20% and 30% of WIST students tend to continue into tertiary education.
