Queen's Guide explores forensics with CQU

It wasn't a dream of first-year Biomedical Science student, Felomina Guy, to achieve the Queen's Guide Award in her guiding career, however her dedication to Guide training over the past 9 years has enabled her to achieve this prize - the first Bundaberg guide in 20 years to do so.

"My special interest area was community service - I worked with disabled bowlers and assisted with a PCYC halloween fun day - it was fun to do," said Miss Guy.

"I had already completed many of the skills challenges but did specific certificates in campfire, canoeing, kayaking - that type of thing - I love all outdoor activities," she said.

"Managing a half-hour campfire session was an experience.

"I had to create a 30-minute program of songs and activities for the 20 or so girls who attended, make my own fire - after choosing the best wood - organise and manage the whole thing."

Miss Guy graduated from Kepnock State High School last year where she was school vice-captain and wasn't certain of her future direction until she attended a forensic day at a Brisbane university.

"It looked really interesting - bones and autopsies - fun!" said Miss Guy.

"I had been really interested in forensics for some time, so decided to do a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at CQU Bundaberg.

"It doesn't really worry me what area of forensics I go into - whether it's crime scenes or working in the morgues or whatever - I don't mind doing dissections and things.

Miss Guy said her experiences in guiding have helped her with application to study.

"As a guide you're supposed to live by your promise - to do your best - so without even noticing it now I seem to be living that promise - once you've made your promise you're in it forever."

There are 2 parts to achieving the Queen's Guide Award - the Gold Endeavour Challenge in which promise and law, outdoor skills, guiding traditions, the patrol system, leadership, world guiding and service must be covered in depth - and the second part where the guide must develop a specific interest for at least 3 months in either service, science and technology, leadership, the arts, outdoor adventure, world guiding, social awareness or a special focus activity.
