Students 'survive' Emerald adventure
Published on 02 August, 2004
Bachelor of Learning Management students from CQU Emerald recently took part in a survival adventure day at Camp Fairbairn.
Lecturer Kathy Sheppard said that student teacher access to outdoor education would help students develop their own values about the environment, human impacts and sustainability.
The students were divided into two tribes, red and black, and then undertook team building exercises and activities on the high ropes course. They earned beads for finishing activities, team spirit and volunteering.
Ground exercises included climbing through man-made spider weds and braving croc infested waters to get all team members onto an island the size of a tractor tyre. The high ropes involved many brave students climbing as high as power poles and walking the tight rope high in the air.
"The day was important to student teachers as it demonstrated philosophies of taking education outdoors and learning through enjoyment," Ms Sheppard said.
