These students are boarding with families who live near the English Language Centre on CQUniversity Rockhampton Campus. CQUniversity also has English Language Centres at its Gold Coast and Sydney campuses.

According to Sang-Ho Kang (known as Nicky), she is making great strides with her spoken English because her homestay 'grandma' encourages her to speak English all the time, which reinforces the emphasis on speaking in her classes.

Nicky, 22, is studying English and Information at Jinju National University and believes her intensive study in Australia will help with her future employment options, as it extends her English beyond written grammar and into real spoken situations.

She is keen to gain a career in hotels or as a travel guide.

Nicky has enjoyed the opportunity to tour the local region and get up close to Australian wildlife, including koalas, kangaroos and goannas.

Nicky says she eats rice-based dishes back in South Korea but is gradually getting used to eating more breads and meats, although the campus does have an Asian food outlet.
