Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

QREX mines expertise of Uni 

This week's Queensland Resources Expo* (QREX) in Rockhampton has drawn on a range of expertise from CQUniversity to ensure its success.

As a Foundation Partner, the University has been involved in a range of key events during the week (July 20-24).

CQUniversity has a commitment to and strength in the resources sector, including applied research, learning partnerships  and other industry projects. The University is motivated to provide regional leadership and in particular to help the Rockhampton region develop its 'resources' potential.

Professor Elizabeth Taylor will provide opening remarks for tomorrow's (Friday's) Australian Resources Conference at the Leichhardt Hotel, which features presentations from Professor John Rolfe and Research Fellow Evan Yabsley (among others). Professor Wal Taylor will provide closing remarks. This conference will examine challenges facing the resources sector, the region and Queensland. LINK to speaker details

The recent launch of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and United States President Barack Obama increased interest in the QREX International Industry Conference, at which Nick Otter from the Institute presented. CQUniversity's Professor John Rolfe was part of the conference's Industry and business outlook roundtable. This event was held at the Leichhardt Hotel on the Monday of QREX. LINK to speaker details

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Rickard officially opened Wednesday's Hypothetical Breakfast, presented by CQUniversity at Rockhampton Leagues Club. This featured Dr Susan Kinnear, Professor Kerry Mummery and recent Engineering graduate Chanelle Harvey (now at Ergon) on the panel.  The  Hypothetical topic was 'Licence to operate - Necessary evil or hidden opportunity'. Associate Professor for Mining Dr Col Greensill and Engineering lecturer Llewellyn Mann coordinated around 50 first-year Engineering students who were 'consulting' for high school students involved with the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) Energy for the Future Workshop on the Wednesday and Thursday. CQUniversity was also a co-organiser of his major event, along with QMEA and the Gladstone Centre for Clean Coal.

Ron Wallis and Raleigh Wallace from our Student Support Centre provided career advice and seminars during the Australian Resources Careers Market (ARCM), which ran from Tuesday to Thursday.

CQUniversity was also a featured exhibitor at this careers market event, with Ian Devenish presenting on the Engineering Co-op program, Bill Blayney presenting on the progression from trades to teaching and Wayne Ah-Wong (Nulloo Yumbah) presenting on Indigenous pathways to University.

Jo Barrie (Navigate CQUni) joined Nell Salem and Julie Willans from the Academic Learning Support Unit to present a 'Journey to a Brighter Future', including background on preparatory programs STEPS, LIFT and WIST.

Meanwhile, multimedia lecturer Brendan Murphy helped to lead careers market workshops tailored for Years 6-8 students.

CQUniversity maintained a double booth at the Trade Exhibition, which ran from Tuesday to Thursday.

* QREX is being held to support the Queensland resources industry through the provision of a platform for trade and networking.  It will not only give an opportunity to Rockhampton businesses to display their product and services, but will also showcase Queensland's resources industry as a whole both nationally and internationally.

QREX also has the objective of providing education on the resources industry, and highlighting the many career opportunities available, including opportunities for students and women looking to enter this industry
