Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Interest in CQUni surges 

Enquiries and applications for CQUniversity undergraduate programs have risen sharply compared to last year, according to figures released today by CQUniversity. Today is the last day for change of preferences to be made by (domestic) applicants for the first major round offer for places which are released next week (January 14).

"First preferences for CQUniversity programs overall are up 10% on last year," said Mike Donahue, Director of Corporate Communications.

Programs such as Environmental Health, Building Design and Building Surveying, Exercise and Sport Sciences are growing significantly, with first preferences for those programs up a combined 40% compared to the same period last year.

More than 500 first preferences have been made for CQUniversity Nursing - an increase of 34% over last year.

Information technology, which seemed to have fallen out of favour with some students in the recent past, appears to be rebooting, too, with 25% growth among 1st preferences reported over last year.

Demand for Physics, a small program, is four times stronger than in 2009.

Arts, too, experienced a renaissance with the introduction of an updated CQUniversity Arts degree for 2010.  1st preferences have increased 60% compared to last year.

1st preferences for CQUniversity's Music and Theatre programs were up a combined 50% as well.

Demand for programs such as Psychology, Business, Property Management and Financial Planning remained comparable with last year.

CQUniversity experienced a 50% increase in enquiries in 2009 compared to 2008, with nearly 7000 people making official requests for program and course information last year.

There's still time to apply for Term 1 enrolment to study on-campus or by distance education. Another round of offers will be made on  February 4 and the University will consider applications for some programs up until the start of term in early March.
