Conservatorium tunes again to country music

CQU's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music helped launch last year's inaugural Australian Institute of Country Music Conference at Gympie, and it is back again as sponsor of this year's event.

PhotoID:935 Conservatorium industry mentors Dr Geoff Walden and Professor Phil Hayward are also delivering papers at the event held on August 29-30, in parallel with Gympie's National Country Music Muster.

Dr Walden's paper is on seminal Australian country music song writers the Webb Brothers and Professor Hayward will talk about Lord Howe Island songs. Both are also involved in organising the conference.

Conference keynote speaker Professor David Whisnant (pictured), and academic and author from the United States, will talk about Appalachia and the politics of country music.

Conservatorium Director Associate Professor Greg Whateley said his team was proud to be involved in starting a tradition of academic interest in country music - which was Australia's most economically viable entertainment industry.
