Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Christine comes from Nelson Mandela's alma mater 

Former South African Christine Woods has arrived at Rockhampton Campus to take on her new role as CQUniversity's Head of Educational Development.

She has previously worked at the University of Fort Hare (Nelson Mandela's alma mater) where she was Director of the Teaching and Learning Centre, involved in academic staff development, student development and e-learning.

What was a key turning point for you?

"I started as a school teacher and slowly got involved in staff development ... my passion for teaching and learning grew from that."

What's coming up in future?

"I will be working closely with academics, faculties, executive deans and deans to promote excellence in learning and teaching."

What's something people might not know about you?

"I like canoeing and surf skiing and I'm an outdoors person who likes to hike."

What advice do you have for young people?

"Be passionate and innovative about your teaching ... see what works and what does not work and move on from there."
