Mackay student and 'Harry Potter' tackle same music theatre role

Mackay student Michael Hoare may not (yet) have the recognition factor of Daniel Radcliffe (aka Harry Potter) but they are sharing the same music theatre role, at least in a parallel sense.

Radcliffe plays the lovable window washer and business go-getter J.Pierrepont Finch in the current Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Meanwhile, music theatre student Hoare takes the same role for the production being staged at CQUniversity's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Mackay from April 14-17 (bookings are via Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre via 4961 9777).

Formerly of Cairns, Michael Hoare composes and records his own music and has performed in pervious productions including Pirates of Penzance and Oliver.

He shares the CQ Conservatorium stage with former Ipswich performer Hannah Barn (in the role of love interest Rosemary Pilkington). Hannah has recently toured the USA as a dancer, performing at Disneyland and Universal Studios, and has previously starred in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (as Marcy Park) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (as Helena).

The role of Miss Jones is played by former Gold Coast actor Morgan Garrity, who has previous experience in Crazy for You (Irene) and The Boy from Oz.

Another former Gold Coaster on the cast is Frog Johnson, who has previously featured in productions of Spamalot and The Producers.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is set in the early 1960s in a high-powered executive office in the USA. The cheeky lead character charms his way to the boardroom with catchy songs including The Company Way, Been a Long Day, A Secretary is Not a Toy, the Brotherhood of Man and I Believe in You.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is being directed in Mackay by Peter Cousens, one of Australia's foremost entertainers (known for his performances in Phantom of the Opera).
