BLM partnership is a win-win

The Courier-Mail reported this week on a joint initiative between CQU's education students and Gladstone West State School. CQU BLM students tutor Year 2 and 3 students through the school's Support a Reader program. Students at Gladstone West who have been identified as needing extra help gain one-on-one support and the CQU students put theory into practice. The Gladstone West teachers also develop mentoring skills.

"It's been win-win for the university and win-win for us," Gladstone West principal Peter Turich told the Courier-Mail.

Dr Bev Moriarty of the Faculty of Education and Creative Arts told the newspaper the university-school partnership meant CQU BLM students could see children making gains in literacy, observe good teaching practices and develop links with parents.

Gladstone West is a state finalist in Education Queensland's Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools.Winners will be announced on September 3.
