Industry to benefit from research group

A Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy research group has been established at Central Queensland University’s Process Engineering and Light Metals Centre (PELM) to perform research for local industry.
Coordinator for the group Dr Col Greensill said the group aims to perform research for local industry helping to improve industry efficiency and in the development of new products and processes.
“We hope by our research we will make our local industries more competitive on the national and global scene,” explained Dr Greensill.
The NIR Research Group is a sub-group of the Non-destructive Analysis Group at PELM. To date this group has performed successful investigative research to determine the uses of NIR spectroscopy for process control.
“It is envisaged that his work will continue thereby providing mechanisms for efficiency gains for local industries,” Dr Greensill said.
The group has recently purchased a NIRSystems 6500 Near Infrared Spectrophotometer which will help the group analyse the chemical composition of a large range of materials. This information can then be used to control plant processes and improve efficiency.
The $150,000 spectrophotometer was commissioned by Foss Pacific’s Applications Manager Dr Paul Brimmer.
