Anna Meares has her sights set on a medal at Beijing.Central Queensland University, along with the rest of the nation, will be cheering on Anna Meares at the 2008 Olympic Games this August.

After suffering from a fractured neck at the world championships back in January, Anna's Olympic chances were unknown until the early hours of Saturday morning when China and Russia's hopefuls bombed out in the women's sprint leaving a spot for Anna in Beijing.

Anna is overjoyed and relieved at the result.

"I am feeling so very, very happy and perhaps more so very, very relieved. The past few months have been very tough with many ups and downs. To come out of it with a second chance to go to the Games I couldn't be happier," Anna said.

Although still recovering from her injury, Anna is getting set for some intense training over the next few months to get her in the best physical condition for the Games.

"Hard work, hard work and more hard work. Physically I am 6 weeks behind where I should be and where all of my rivals are so I have to work extra hard to get back to where I was or even better.

"I will be training here in Adelaide with the team until June when I will head over to Paris for a race and Germany for a race before heading into final preparations for the Games. That will include a 3-week camp at the AIS base in Italy and a 4-week camp in Buttgen Germany before flying over to Beijing."

As a CQU Ambassador and a student of the University's Bachelor of Learning Design program, Anna has developed strong ties with the CQU community in recent years.

Despite deferring her studies to concentrate on her medal chances, the door to study will always be open to Anna at CQU.

Anna first enrolled at CQU through the Elite Athlete Friendly University Project, a national initiative of the Australian institute of Sport.

Through this project, CQU ensures that elite athletes, who have been identified by some of Australia's key sports organisations, can successfully pursue a degree while maintaining their sports commitments that often involve overseas travel or time off for major training camps or competitions.

Anna joins 8 other sports people currently participating in the program at CQU: Softballer Melanie Beal, Cyclists Sara Carrigan, Joshua Edwards and Jeremy Hogg, cricket all-rounder Rowan Murray, and Rugby Union players Scot Fava, Matthew Hodgson and Adam Ashley-Cooper.
