Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

The John Holland Group (a contracting, engineering and services provider) and CQUniversity officially launched the program after the second presentation for the year by General Manager of John Holland Group, Brendan Petersen..

Mr Petersen later shared with students the great opportunities that exist for graduates of CQUniversity and how John Holland hopes to help them become job-ready on completion of their degrees.

He said it was hard enough for those in the workforce to keep up-to-date with industry changes, so it is vital university students are provided with the opportunity to learn about the industry from those on the ground.

CQUniversity's Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean Professor Elizabeth Taylor said the Engineers for the Future program reinforces the University's strong commitment to provide graduate engineers who are ready for the workforce.

In a prelude to the Vice-Chancellor’s inaugural public lecture this week, Professor Scott Bowman said he believed this partnership was one of the many ways he hopes to direct the university into the future as one of Australia’s most engaged universities.
