Recent changes to legislation have affected how new and renovated buildings will have to provide access for people with disabilities.
These changes to the Federal Government legislation are the topic of a FREE information seminar at CQUniversity next Thursday June 30 from 1pm to 3pm.
Darryl O'Brien will unpack the changes to building legislation at a seminar in Rockhampton.Seminar presenter and CQUniversity building surveying lecturer Darryl O'Brien said the seminar will provide information on the new legislation which took effect on May 1 and the changes to building practices in the sector.
The information sessions will seek to explain building obligations for owner builders, professional builders and designers.
"There have been amendments to the existing Design for Access and Mobility standard which will affect all new building work and extensions or alterations to existing buildings that need building approval," Mr O'Brien said.
"The legislation has been introduced to ensure building work satisfies the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, with the primary intention to provide dignified and equitable access to all buildings, including swimming pools, with the exception of detached dwellings and duplexes."
For example under the new legislation, Mr O'Brien said builders will need to ensure building entrances and paths, door widths and designs, ramps and stairs are all safe for use by all community members.
The seminar is open to all members of the community. To register for this seminar phone Anu Bajwa on 4930 9733 or email a.bajwa@cqu.edu.au by close of business on Wednesday June 29.
