Miram Vale's Evan Bayliss started his engineering studies in Rockhampton with a perfect grade point average (GPA of 7) and now he can look forward to continued success thanks to an Orica Engineering Scholarship valued at $8000.
Evan has also earned a 'potential expertise fund' prize for being the highest-performing first-year student at CQUniversity Rockhampton, an Engineers Australia Rockhampton Prize for the highest GPA in Engineering Foundation Mathematics and the Homer Cheng Ergon Energy Memorial Prize for the highest GPA in first-year Electrical Engineering.
The CQUniversity student said the financial assistance would be of great value while he was studying and living on campus and it had already provided extra motivation to succeed. As a 'co-op' student, Evan can also look forward to 2 paid work placements in relevant industries as part of his degree.
Orica Ltd and CQUniversity Australia have partnered to support the future of the local resources sector and CQUniversity engineering students with a scholarship and an academic prize.
The scholarship has been established to assist students with tuition and educational expenses, while the academic prize of $1000 has been introduced to reward and encourage academic excellence within the Engineering program.
Orica's Site Manager Yarwun, Neil Graham said the scholarship "is an important part of Orica's commitment to local education".
"By supporting local students we are fostering our local talent and making an investment in Central Queensland's future," he said.
"The quality of applicants was extremely high and we are very encouraged an outstanding student like Evan Bayliss is coming on as the 2010 Orica Scholarship recipient."
