Active Kids 2007 A Sporting & Recreation Camp for Kids The most sought after event of the year is back on again. First a big thank you to all the keen parents who have already registered even before the event was formally advertised (that’s how successful & fun the camp is). For all those who have participated previously and have yet not registered, the good news is that the camp is back on again next year - better and bigger than ever. For those who have not yet been part of it, here is some information for you: What is the camp all about? Active Kids Rockhampton is a new and exciting concept developed within the School of Health & Human Performance, Central Queensland University. The camp is aimed at 9 – 13 year old boys and girls in the Central Queensland area who need some entertaining after the Christmas excitement has died down and before School resumes for 2007. We are targeting for more than 150 kids to join the camp next year According to the Bureau of Statistics, most camps are sports based targeting only sporty kids and alarmingly, the amount of time primary aged kids participate in physical activity is decreasing dramatically. To our knowledge, Rockhampton provides vacation care and childcare, but no multi-sport and recreational activities in a camp style format. The project team will be talking on healthy eating and helping children understand what the difference between good and poor nutrition as part of the week’s sessions along with a fun packed sporting activities. We have had tremendous responses in the last two years with more and more parents enrolling their kids for this program. We are delighted to say we have already secured more than a dozen families interested in joining their kids without having advertised the program yet. Camp aims.

To promote physical activity within the community To help involve sport and non- sport orientated children in physical activity. To introduce a variety of sports and recreational activities to all participants. To education children on the importance of nutrition/Diet To promote healthy Lifestyle choices The Active Kids Rockhampton, a 5 day energy packed camp was an enormous success in January 2006.

Central Queensland University students play a major role in Active Kids, with student PE teachers and Industry Practicum students from the School of Health & Human Performance forming the Project Team and Camp Captains for the Camp. This group of motivated students are already immersed in preparations for the 2007 camp. The most up to date information on Active Kids Rockhampton can be found on via our School Website (http://www.ahs.cqu.edu.au/hhp/active_kids.htm) including information about the Active Kids Project Team and registration forms. Additionally, we are offering an early bird discount for families who send me the registration of interest form by 30th November 2006 - so make sure you get in early and spread the word to other families to do the same! If you kids are usually bored at home after Christmas, the camp is a great idea to keep them occupied and geared up for starting school in 2007. Please note this year the camp is running two weeks before school starts due to Australia day falling in the last week of school holidays!
