Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Regional universities champion leads CQUniversity Australia 

Professor Scott Bowman was appointed Vice-Chancellor & President of CQUniversity Australia in August 2009, after serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (University Services) and Registrar at James Cook University (JCU).

Professor Bowman has held numerous academic and university management positions in the UK and Australia since the early 1990s and has extensive experience in regional universities in Australia.

He is a former radiographer with a strong background in clinical and health sciences, community engagement, marketing, international education, distance education, government relations, academic planning, business management and development. He has a strong research track record in the fields of health and professional judgement and decision making.

Professor Bowman has undertaken work for the OECD to determine how regional universities impact on their regions.

He has a keen interest in regional economic development and has been an active member of development agencies in South Australia and Queensland.

He is the former Head of the Cairns Campus of James Cook University and held similar positions at the University of South Australia (head of campus, Whyalla; and Director of Regional Engagement).

A foundation member and past President of the Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance, Professor Bowman believes that universities can and should provide solutions to issues that are specific to communities in which they operate. 

Whist at Whyalla, for example, Professor Bowman worked with One Steel to develop an Applied Statistics Unit at UniSA to provide industrial mathematics services to local industry and government.

Professional History

Previous positions held by Professor Bowman include Principal Lecturer at South Bank University (UK); Head of the Department of Radiography and Imaging Sciences at the University College of St Martin (UK); Dean of the Faculty of Health Science and Community at St Martin's; Head of the School of Medical Radiations at Charles Sturt University; Foundation Head of the School of Clinical Sciences at Charles Sturt University; Dean of the Whyalla Campus, University of South Australia (UniSA); Foundation Director of Regional Engagement UniSA; and at James Cook University: Pro Vice-Chancellor Corporate and Commercial, PVC Academic Planning and Development and DVC International and Engagement.
