High school students connect with university life

About 27 Central Queensland high school students got their first taste of university life during CQU Connections Uni Experience this week (from Monday June 20 to Friday June 24).

Students travelled from as far as Longreach, Blackall, Mackay and Bundaberg to attend the week-long program designed to encourage students from low socio-economic backgrounds to include university study as a viable option in their future.

PhotoID:1977 “It’s about demystifying university for students who might not normally consider a university education in their life plan,” CQU Connections coordinator Olive Mallory said.

The year 11 and 12 students selected for the program will discover university program and career options while meeting staff and students from CQU Rockhampton.

The annual event allows the students to immerse in university life by staying at CQU’s residential college, Capricornia College.

Students learnt about careers such as nursing, engineering, business, psychology, social work, journalism, teaching, human movement science and animation. They also took time out to tour the gym and sports facilities, view the library, tour the aquatic science facilities, take part in an aerobics session, tour the campus and undertake career testing.

Ms Mallory said Uni Experience was one of CQU Connections’ programs to raise awareness of tertiary education opportunities with most past participants going on to study at CQU.

PhotoID:1978 “We find students introduced to university this way are better able to make the adjustment and transition to university life. They have a more realistic expectation of university study and are less likely to drop out of study.”.

Since 1997, CQU Connections has helped 334 students begin their studies with CQU. About 45 have successfully graduated with many continuing on to undertake postgraduate study.
