Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Jazz Botanical in Mackay on Sunday 

Relax this Sunday, October 17, by treating yourself to an afternoon of soul, blues, Latin and jazz music featuring bands of the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) jazz department.

This free community concert is presented by CQCM in conjunction with Mackay City Council and ABC Tropical North at Mackay’s Regional Botanical Gardens on Lagoon Street.

PhotoID:1717 Hosted by popular ABC breakfast host Anne O’Keeffe, the program commences at 3pm with a performance by ‘El Loco,’ a band specialising in Latin American music with selections by Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Santana, as well as the more traditional sounds of Latin America.

The CQCM Jazz Orchestra will take to the stage at 3.30pm. This acclaimed orchestra has performed with many of Australia’s leading musicians including James Morrison, Don Burrows, Grace Knight and Don Rader and includes staff, students and local music teachers.

At 4pm the ultimate blues band the ‘Blue Moods’, featuring the extraordinary talents of singer/guitarist Russell Van Den Bosch, will perform a selection of songs from such greats as Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray-Vaughan, the Allman Brothers and Albert Collins.

Mixing the sounds of rock, funk and soul, ‘Rubber Biscuit’ is a band that includes a horn section and backing singers and they will perform from 4.30pm. All singers will have their turn sharing the limelight as they perform repertoire by Joe Cocker, The Corrs, ABBA, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and others.

PhotoID:1718 Vocalists will include Sarah Neep, Maria Ruffino, Poppy Brockman-Tanham and of course Ngaiire Joseph, who has returned to her studies at CQCM following her Australian Idol experience.

Bring along a blanket or chair and some afternoon delights; then relax and enjoy this spectacular concert.
