Bright scholarship student juggles study with work as graduation nears

CQUniversity student Brendon Harms is on the homestretch to receiving his Bachelor of Engineering (Co-Op program) - with a wealth of experience under his belt.

With just two months until Brendon graduates from the four-and-a-half-year program, he will have already spent three years working for Xstrata Coal in an underground workshop at Oaky North, and the past three months as a Mechanical Engineer at Fenner Dunlop Engineered Conveyor Solutions in Mackay.

The bright student won the Desmond Tabone Engineering Scholarship which provided him with $3000 annually. Brendon said the support allowed him to focus more on studying and working in the industry of his choice.

"It really helped, especially in my first few years buying laptops, textbooks and study equipment."

"It also guaranteed that I would get paid vacation work while I was studying."

The Desmond Tabone Engineering Scholarship has been established in the memory of Desmond Tabone by his wife Dorothy Tabone to support a financially deserving Engineering student who intends to specialise in Mechanical Engineering.

Brendon has also since gone on to win the Orica Limited Prize for achieving the highest GPA in the Mine Product Handling course.

He said his work at Fenner Dunlop involves designing and managing the installation of conveyor belts for mine sites across Central Queensland.

He has recently bought a house in Mackay and is looking forward to discovering more about the engineering industry.
