Eleanor chalks up career tips

Over 100 CQUniversity education students have converged on Rockhampton Campus for the annual Education Forum (held Monday, June 27).

Among those participating was Eleanor Duffin, a final-year Bachelor of Learning Management (Primary) student who had the chance to chat with Chris Cook, Principal HR Consultant for the Department of Education and Training.

Eleanor also ran into Greg Wilkes, who was principal during her school days at Mt Archer Primary. Mr Wilkes now works for CQUniversity as a Teaching School Coordinator.

Facilitated by CQUniversity's School of Education, the Education Forum provides opportunities for graduating students to hear from representatives from the teaching profession, regarding employment in 2012.

The Forum enables representatives from Education Queensland, Catholic Education and the Independent sector to address impending graduates of the Bachelor of Learning Management and Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching programs on the application process to become a teacher from the start of 2012.

Students were briefed on the important role the Queensland Teachers' Union and Queensland Independent Educators' Union play in the teaching workforce.

The Queensland College of Teachers conducted a workshop on the Queensland teacher registration process, as well as the graduate testing process.

Graduates of 2011 will be the first to undergo the rigorous graduate testing process by the Queensland College of Teachers, with those seeking employment as an Early Childhood or Primary teacher from 2012 onwards being required to undergo a test on literacy, numeracy and science content knowledge.

Participating education students also had the opportunity to hear from past graduates about their experiences in their first year of teaching.

The day concluded with students completing their Student Protection training and Code of Conduct update, a requirement for all students commencing their final in-school practicum and internship.

The Employment Forum coincides with the mid-year Residential School for the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching, with students from Far North Queensland to Tasmania travelling to Rockhampton to take part in the event.
