CQU in tune with International Day for Biological Diversity

The United Nations proclaimed May 22 ‘The International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD)’ to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

PhotoID:2800 CQU is committed to ensuring that its own grounds help support biodiversity.

In particular, the campus in Rockhampton has actively promoted the use of native species in landscaping.

One year ago, the Plant Sciences Group under the guidance of Associate Professor Nanjappa Ashwath planted over 50 native species, close to the prominent location near the flagpoles, and the plants have thrived during their first year.

Native plants were donated by the Plant Sciences Group and the Livingstone, Rockhampton and Gladstone councils and were sourced from local nurseries.

PhotoID:2801 While an attractive feature in their own right, they also serve as a useful teaching resource when students are introduced to the Australian flora and to their incorporation into water efficient landscape design.
