NZ grant indicates respect for preventative health

A major New Zealand funding body has recognised the value of lifestyle surveys in health research, alongside the traditional focus on ‘bench science’ and medical treatments.
CQU's Professor Kerry Mummery has received funding from the Royal Society of New Zealand to develop an international collaboration with Auckland University of Technology Professor Greg Kolt in the study of the determinants of physical activity in the New Zealand and Australian populations.
The CQU Rockhampton academic, who helped spread the 10 000 Steps Project throughout Australia, has gained the funding from the Royal Society through its International Science and Technology Linkages Fund.
Professor Mummery said the funding from 2005-2007 would support his travel, accommodation and research activities in New Zealand.
It would also provide reciprocal travel, accommodation and research support for NZ's Professor Kolt, who is the Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Health at Auckland University of Technology. ENDS.
